My last season at Ironwood Ridge was as an SU student in the mid-70s. Pete agreed to give a group of us season passes in exchange for helping prep the slopes for the upcoming season. I don't recall planting any trees, but we sure slogged through our share of strategically placed drainage ditches plus dug a few ourselves. Bob, you just reminded me of that foot-deep lake that would form at the end of the run after the first good melt off, then freeze into a solid block of ice a few days later. Regards

My dad ran the ski school their for many years and we always got a free family pass (although, as I remember not many people paid to ski) I skiied their every weekend and some week nights. Broke my leg on Milkyway after Pete Reynolds planted a tree under the headwall trying to suck of some of the water that always ran down the trail.( the tree broke off after my contact with it) Night skiing was interesting as Pete and his crew pointed the lights up hill! On sunny days the deck on the lodge was full of adults drinking wine as us kids tucked Skid Row! Great times, miss that place!

It is always noble and good to point to the absurdities that people who are lost in the mind and disconnected from the heart produce. Yes, shout it from the rooftops if that is what you wish to do.
But, in the process, we must remember NOT to get lost in our mind and forget to connect with OUR heart!

We will forever be caught in the traps of our own mind if we fight with others' minds! There is simply no way to express our heartfelt truth without the cunningness of others' minds taking it and running with it through the briars of distortion for their own purposes. These purposes, which are primarily power - and the money that helps produce it - are only replacements for what we ALL really want: for love and worthiness. And these already exist in our being, but are covered and usually inaccessible as a result of our own incessant thought-thinking mind.

And just remember what we are doing…that in this war of words process with others, we hope to persuade others to our point of view, hoping that their intelligence will see the light of truth in what we have said. Yet, so many do not have that intelligence, and are so lost in emotions and fears and prejudices that they are unable to hear us. This can only produce frustration and even anger in us.

So, what to do?

Get to know the machinations and politics of our OWN mind! Explore meditation and how it can assist us in dis-identifying with the mind, and reconnecting with the heart and the being.
In THAT space, we will be able to change the only thing that is REALLY in our hands. And that is the change of OURSELVES! When coupled with others who are doing the same, this will lead to the only significant paradigm shift that is possible - consciousness blooming in people, one by one....

Eddie, thank you for your reasoned comment. I think our opinions are compatible, in that I have offered global warming arguably as "anywhere from valid controversy to proven fact". I can accept that macro cycles outside our control may be a contributor to warming at this time, but this does not negate the growing body of evidence that human impacts exist. In any case, a political movement serves no one by pledging to criminalize climate science to enforce its own opinion on the subject.

From the beginning of time, the planet has been changing. Scientists have long studied the heating and cooling patterns that the earth. Whether you are for or against global warming, the facts cannot be denied that yes, the earth warms, and it just so occurs we are already going via a steady warming period. Nevertheless, what goes up must come down, and the earth will go through a cooling period as well. The trends have shown us this, and many say that we have already entered the cooling period. Thoughts?

Comment on Why Conservatism is Bad for Capitalism by David Hovgaard

If conservatism is good for the economy why do progressive states do better economically. California has a larger and more diverse economy then Texas which is pretty much bound to the oil companies. This just doesn't apply to states you can see this effect on the county level.

The Mercury news published a map of which counties produce the most taxable income and which use the most taxes in all cases conservative counties got more in taxes then they sent to Sacramento while progressive counties payed more because they produced more and got back less.

If you look at where the innovation occurs its not in states like Mississippi this not because the people their are stupid. It is because they have less opportunity and less access to capital because almost always their economies are tied to one or two companies this limits competition. If you are the only game in town you do not want rivals rivals driving up the cost of workers and that is not something you want to change. After all if you are king of your little swamp pool you want to stay king. This is conservatism the preserving of the status quo.

If conservatives had their way the union movement would never have taken root in this country and the sixteen hour day would be the norm. Health care and retirement would be reserved for those that could afford them. The rest of us would get a pine box not a gold watch.

Everything that has made life better for the working man has come over the objections of conservatives. Social security, medicare, civil rights, seat belts, employer paid health care all came after a long hard fight that cost lives on both sides. The idea that people that do not like change have done anything that did not benefit them directly is a as ridiculous as the notion that greed is good.
